Creating a Tech-less Room

Picture
Yes, tech-less rooms actually a thing and is it ever needed! It seems as though everyone is constantly on their tablet, phone, watching tv or connected to some other form of tech.  The latest trend among my friends and family are the Echo from Amazon.  Sure it’s fun to have these forms of tech at your disposal, however, its vital that you take time away from tech.  Connect back with your family or even yourself.  Open a book, have a nice conversation or just sit and enjoy the peace and quiet.  It seems as though these items that were meant to save us time are actually taking time away from some of the most important parts of our life.

How do you create a tech-less room???

Start by making a list of hobbies or interests that you enjoy that do not involve a form of technology.  Perhaps it’s knitting, reading, singing or maybe a family card or board game.  List your items and then determine a space for this where you can remove any technology and also not allow any forms of technology in.  I actually have a client that has made their family room tech free.  She even made a sign for the room that says “tech free room” to remind the kids to keep their phones and tablets outside.  Next, focus on arranging the layout of the room to work for your interests.  Place the furniture so that everyone can enjoy each other’s company. Ensure your favorite reading chair has a bright reading light.  Finally add cozy touches of fabrics through fluffy toss pillows and throws.  This will ensure everyone relaxes and enjoys themselves.  Before you know it the family will just naturally migrate to this room to spend free time.  Hopefully laughter and smiling faces will become more common in your home and everyone will relax a bit more.  Really enjoy this time with your family and who knows, maybe you'll even discover some new interests.
