Fly Solo Once In Awhile....

Picture
Are you uncomfortable going it alone? Do you get nervous about not having that one person next to you? Well, perhaps it’s time for a change. We so often avoid being by ourselves, worried we will actually have to deal with our feelings. We may find ourselves a little uncomfortable or we may have to really work through some emotions.
Spending time by yourself can be a magical experience. I know many people who have solved some major life dilemmas after being on a long solo car trip. Even a couple hours by yourself in nature can be life changing. Have you ever spent some time in nature by yourself in meditation? Go for it. Schedule this time in your calendar before you can back out.

Want to go big? Opt to go on holiday by yourself. I’ve done quite bit of travel by myself and I definitely get those times when having someone with me would make things so much easier. Maybe a little nervousness and anxiety creeps up. Possibly a feeling of loneliness blows through. What do I do when this happens? BREATHE. Sometimes you have to sit and breathe through those feelings. Acknowledge and experience them, and then let them pass. Years ago I went on a trip to Paris where I spent the entire first evening closed up in my hotel room filled with nervousness and loneliness. I decided to devote that time to deciphering these feelings and the next day I awoke ready to take in the city and experience as much as possible. I’ve since enjoyed solo trips to Sedona, New York and even a few beach vacations on my own, alone with my own thoughts.

After some attempts at this, you’ll become more and more used to having a blast all on your own. You’ll meet some amazing people, experience awesome places and forget any anxiety about being solo. (Now is my time to remind you to be a smart traveler, especially by yourself. Your personal safety is always most important). By taking time to be by yourself and actually feel things, you’ll get more and more used to it. You could compare this to a meditation practice. At first, you’re not sure what to do, and after continuing it, you come to realize everything that it provides you with, and you learn so much about yourself. That bit of fear and loneliness will dissipate and you’ll have great confidence.
