Recently I wrote a blog post "Where I Find Design Inspiration". I was really proud of it as I spent a lot of time crafting this post with my most favorite inspirational sites and ideas. Unfortunately, now I feel like I totally flopped on the post! Yes, flopped as in a total belly flop in the pool failure. Since posting it, I realized that I left off my #1, most important source of inspiration. Oh yeah, I don’t know what I was thinking! Perhaps though, I completely overlooked this source of inspiration as it’s not a destination such as a website or location, but more of a state of mind. Movement Simple movement is my #1 source of inspiration, from walking, jogging to biking and even repetitive sun salutations. I love to exercise not just for health benefits, but it allows me to clear my mind and let in pure inspiration. My mind literally gets flooded with so many out-of-the box ideas! A couple years ago I began to take the occasional Kundalini Yoga class. This type of yoga can be rather unusual if you’ve only practiced for example, a more traditional Vinyasa class. Kundalini classes consist of a set of Kryias or movements. It’s not unusual to complete a single repetitive movement for several minutes at a time. In this type of yoga I quickly go to this space of total Zen. Just completely relaxed, and spaced out Zen! I never knew how to explain my inspiration through movement until experimenting with Kundalini Yoga. Perhaps the repetitious movement frees my mind to go where it wants and my running, walking, biking and similar actions do the same. It's kind of like meditation, only instead of going blank and quiet, my mind is filled with colors, textures, images and ideas! All I know is that I must always have a notepad right inside the door after a run or bike ride. I literally sit on the floor and stretch and take notes of my thoughts and ideas. It’s almost like I can’t even write them down fast enough! Well now I feel better and thank you for your time to allow me to reboot. Now, as always I want to hear from you. What is your source of inspiration that is so natural and easy you don’t even think about it? No matter what your craft is from designing, painting, songwriting, dancing or more. Let’s hear about it!
