I've always struggled with waking up in the morning. I've found that I literally need eight hours of sleep a night. I know many people (including my husband) who can get by on 5-6 hours, but not me. Unfortunately, even after a full night's rest and even sleeping soundly I do find I still struggle to wake up. Maybe you're one of those magical people who just wake up each morning without an alarm. You lucky duck! If you're not like that...stay with me. When setting an alarm you basically have two options. You have the alarm that goes off quietly, in fact so quiet that you either don't hear it at all or can easily tap the off button and go back to sleep. The other is the blaring screech of a really loud alarm where you not only wake up but basically jump out of your skin. So we DO have to wake up, some with more help than others, but I just don't think our bodies are meant to have that jarring effect first thing in the morning. The second you wake up to a blaring alarm your body may be in a heightened panic mode from the loud screeching. What a way to start your day! My belief is that it is much nicer and loving to the body to wake up slowly and gently. Now, let me introduce you to my new best friend, my Wake Up Light. I'd been researching and considering one of these for years. I even experimented with my husband who would leave lights on in the bedroom in the morning to help me wake up. (Remember he's the six hour a night kind of guy.) After seeing how much this helped me wake up, he purchased the Phillips Wake-Up Light Model HF3505/6 for my birthday. It is oh-so-magical! I can't begin to explain the great effects of this light. It wakes you up in a gentle way and helps you feel fully awake and refreshed at the time of the actual alarm. At 30 minutes prior to the time of my alarm, the light begins to turn on. At first its quite dim and then intensifies over the next 30 minutes. It will then be at full strength and the birds begin to sing. I have it set to these beautiful bird sounds, however they have other sounds as well as the radio. You can also adjust the light intensity if you're more sensitive to light. My husband purchased this alarm through Amazon and it was easy to plug in and set up. My only negative would be the amount of buttons. While it is great to have options, there are so may different buttons on the front and even side that it can a be bit tricky to make sure you're hitting the right one. Overall, I'm quite pleased with this model. They have also come out with models that can help ease you into sleep. They begin with a bright light and slowly dim over 30 minutes, basically the opposite of the morning routine. I didn't go for this option as I already have implemented rituals to prepare for sleep (click here for more). My Wake-Up LightIn the end I'd give this a solid 9. Due to the many buttons, its going to miss out on being a perfect 10.
Do you have a wake up light or similar tool to help you wake up? I'd love to hear about it! Share in the comment section below.
