I’m always being asked where I go for inspiration. The list below are my top destinations for getting that inspirational vibe. Hopefully they’ll encourage you on your next project! Online Who doesn’t love scouring online sources for design inspiration!?!? Of course Pinterest is a given, right? No one can have an inspiration list that doesn’t include this fun and addictive site. I also scour interior design/home/lifestyle sites such as My Domaine, Dwell, A Cup of Jo, and Inhabitat to name a few. Magazines & Catalogs Belonging to different professional organizations gets my name on the list for basically every design magazine and catalog out there. It can seem like a lot of mail, but I’m a kid in a candy store with these magazines and catalogs. Early on Saturday mornings I grab some coffee and scour each one tearing pages out of images and articles. I then file them away for reference and inspiration later. Some of my favorites are Architectural Digest, Metropolitan Home, Real Simple, Flower, and Veranda. Nature/Meditation Whether you realize it or not, we all have a huge connection to nature and the rhythms of nature. Whenever I’m feeling stuck, I head outside for a walk in nature. Even five minutes will bring you what you need. Spend time walking among trees, with your bare feet in the grass or admiring your flowerbeds. Still need more? Spend some time in meditation. Just close your eyes, lean up against a tree and I just know that inspiration of a color, texture or style will come to you. Travel/Touring Traveling has been an exciting part of my inspiration. I love to travel and view how other people in different areas of the world and even our own country move and live in their spaces. I also love to visit spiritual places such as cathedrals, temples, and similar sites. (In fact I’ll Google these types of places even before researching food!!!) The intricate beauty and essence of spaces such as the Chapel of the Holy Cross, St. Peters in Rome, Hagia Sophia, Sagrada Familia, Mandir Temples and even The Old City of Jerusalem are spectacular. Sites like this are always on the top of my list as the beauty and the spirit of the space always leaves me in awe. They inspire me to create spaces for my clients that give them even a touch of this special feeling or essence. No need to book a flight around the world, sometimes you can find a hidden gem just a few blocks away. Look for interesting architecture, a great story or just anything visual that calls to you. Discussions with Friends There is nothing I love more than discussing design ideas and trends with my friends. Of course many of my friends are interior designers so we all go nuts over this topic. We attend continuing education courses together and learn about the latest and greatest materials and installation techniques. You don’t need to have an interior designer friend for inspiration though, simply chat with your hairstylist, yoga buddies, work associates and find out what other people are using and loving. Often these will be the people who also know of local art fairs, designer house events, markets, and even sales at local furniture stores and design boutiques. I also recently attended a Unleash Your Creative Genius workshop with Meadow Linn. And...lucky for you she has just scheduled another one. Click here for information. So this is my list of go-to list for inspiration. If you have a favorite source of inspiration such as a website, magazine, blog or more please share it in the comments below for everyone.
